Blackwater Ecological Preserve

Home to many of Virginia's rarest plants

The Blackwater Ecological Preserve is approximately 300 acres of the Longleaf Pine community at the northern terminus of its range. There we monitor rare plant species, many of which are S1 or S2 species in Virginia. With students Toni Dotterer, Nick Flanders, Isaiah Amos, and Endicott Parks I inventoried all our Longleaf Pines, collecting data on diameter, height, and age. We also established plots for long-term monitoring of Longleaf Pine seedlings. More information on the Preserve available here:
